Jeroni Munyós (around 1520 - 1592)

I am Jeroni Munyos, Professor of Hebrew and Mathematics in the University of Valencia.

I was born in Valencia fifty-six years ago, I completed a Bachelor of Arts in Estudi General de la Ciudad and completed my training in Europe, at the College de France and the University of Leuven. I worked as a teacher of Hebrew in Ancona and when I was thrity-five I returned to Valencia. For a decade I occupied the chairs of Hebrew and mathematics at the University, but the lack of means and resources mean I am unable to fully develop my scientific work linked to humanism. I am interested in Hebrew, Latin and Greek, theology, mathematics, astronomy, astrology, cosmography and natural history, but I decided to hide my thoughts and experiments. I do not print my work as it is difficult to argue against the charges of theologians, inquisitors, philosophers and teachers. This has happened with the publication of the Book of the New Comet I wrote at the request of King Philip II: Although the emergence of a new celestial body in the constellation of Cassiopeia confirms the inadequacy of the Thomist theories about the incorruptibility of the heavens, my claims have been the subject of great controversy started by the king's courtiers. From now on I will only write manuscripts that will not jeopardize my tranquility.
