Marta Aliaga (1505-1525)

I am Marta Aliaga, hija de Cristofol Aliaga, a soldier, now deceased. I was engaged to Pere Alcanyis, velevet-merchant, also deceased.

I was born in Valencia twenty years ago. My whole family was killed by the troops of the Count of Melito during the revolt of the Germania and now, no job or benefit, I am forced to work in the brothel. My father, Cristofol Aliaga, my brothers: Mateu, Joan and Andrew, my fiancé, Pere Alcanyis, allartisans, joined the Germania brotherhood but soon became disillusioned. My father and my brothers did not return from the battles of Gandia and Almenara, except Andreu. Even he fell eventually, protecting the king whilst undercover at Burjassot. Earlier my fiance, Pere, had been cruelly executed in Valencia. The morning after the beheading, the captain, Vicent Peris, was discovered in the city by the lieutenantAmadet Serrano while trying to leave disguised, via Xativa. I was alone with my mother. All our goods were confiscated the poor cannot not survive long. No neighbor dared to talk to me for fear that they may be thought of as a follower of the Germania. Because of my poverty, I decided to offer my body around the Market to anyone who was willing to pay. Discovered by the law, I am now confined to thebrothel. I will work there until I the surgeon visits, and I, with the French Pox, will die in sin and pustules.
