Guillema Armengol (1287-1348)

I am Guillema Armengol, weaver, and wife of Berenguer Tovia.

I was born in Valencia, in the parish of San Antonio, 29 years ago. I am the youngest of four brothers. My father, Andreu Armengol, came to the city when he was very young from his hometown of Bellpuig.  He quickly entered the service of a tinker of the neighborhood and married Nicolaua, my mother, who died when I was little. At 17, I married Berenguer Tovia and we had four children: Elisenda, who is now 10, Anna, 8, Miquel, who died shortly after birth, and Pasqualet, who just turned 2 years. The girls and I help Berenguer in the workshop with the spinning and the carding of wool, and take care of the house. We prepare the bread and take it to the oven in the center of the neighborhood, we buy food in the Plaza del Mercado, and we also prepare meals. When he comes home, Llorenç Eixarch, the potter, I prepare sardines, hake or some sea fish.  Those people from Teruel had never tasted fresh fish. I know he likes it.
