At the end of the nineteenth century the anarchist theories elaborated by Mikhail Bakunin (1814-1876) reached Spain and enjoyed great popularity among Valencian labour movements, predominantly in the form of Marxist socialism. Anarchism, when in the form of unions, rejected the socialist idea of forming political workers parties and declared the need to form unions who would fight for immediate improvements. At the same time, anarchists fought to build a society without a government or classes, where property would be in the hands of the workers and each individual worked by their own volition and was compensated according to their work or their needs.
