A grouping of workers in the same trade that appeared in Spain near the end of the 19th century beginning with the legalization of the freedom of assembly in 1887. They soon acquired an agressive character and paved the way for later unions, which instead encompassed a variety of trades and found solidarity between members of the same class rather than catering to a single occupation.
