A military body created by the Spanish state in 1844 to ensure the stability of the public order, the protection of the people and their property, and the execution of and respect for the law. Because of their allegiance to those in power, their jurisdiction also extended to the repression of politically dissident movements, such as the progessive revolutionaries, the labourer movement, and anarchists.
