Pere Molina (1850-1910)

I am Pere Molina, blind, reciter of coloquios.

I was born in Benimaclet 50 years ago and have been blind from birth, so I’ve made a living reciting coloquios, coplillas, and romances and selling them printed on pliegos de cornel (paper leaflets). The association for the blind used to have a monopoly on their distribution, but now that anyone can make them, they end up selling less and going unappreciated by the public. Before, in any tavern or soireé you’d see romances sung to the tune of a guitar, but now, with variety shows, films and other modern fads, tradition has fallen by the wayside. At least things don’t seem so bad when the festivals come around: Christmas, Carnival, Fallas, Easter, the July Fair, and Saint Dionysus.
