In 1871 the new dominant class, the bourgeoisie, created a party tailored to them, the Fair of July. Initially, drawing from the traditional running of the bulls in San Jaime, they intended to organize a commercial fair, but soon the carnival took on a more festive character with attractions, rides, canopies, bloodless flower fights, literary and musical contests, and fireworks.
