Guillem Tovià (1375-1436)

I am Guillem Tovià, son of Jeroni Tovià , weaver, and Úrsola Sapena.

I am 15 years old and I admit that I have always been a bit rebellious. However, I think that I will be more cautious after the terrible fright I experienced. On Good Friday I was with friends at the Market Square when a group of apprentices started coming towards the Jewish quarter. They carried a blue banner with the cross and were worked up after hearing a rumour that the jews had captured a child an eaten it. They said the archpriest of Seville, and that the jews should be baptized or die. Next to one of the gates of the ghetto, in the Plaza de La Higuera, we were joined by a few men, whereupon we entered the ghetto and starting calling for conversion. Several jews closed the door and trapped us inside, at which point the situation became very tense. Many jewish families hid in their homes while others stared at us as we huddled around the banner at Mar street. After a few minutes, Martin, who was in Valencia recruiting people for overseas campaigns, began to yell from the other side of the door, demanding our release. The jews were fearful and did not agree, until suddenly people began to enter through the ditch and from the roofs of neighbouring houses. A crowd entered the jewish quarter to fight with knives. I was terrified and ran home when they opened the doors, but throughout the day I could hear the tumult of the people looting homes, making campfires to burn loan letters, and raping and murdering Jews. They killed more than two hundred and have been gradually going to parishes to baptise people.
