Guillem Tovià (1375-1436)

I am Guillem Tovià, weaver master.

I was born in Valencia in 1375 and I am 37 years old. I own a textile shop that I Inherited from my father, but I have expanded his business so that it now includes three looms, two apprentices and two Sardinian Slaves. I never liked the trade, but it pays enough to invest in other affairs such as the command or census. Recent times have not been very good for business, thanks to the banditry and the death of King Martin without descendents, which causes years of instability until the Compromise of Caspe. Luckily, with the help of father Vicent Ferrer and his brother Bonifaci, we have a new king, Fernando de Antequera. Father Vicent is currently in town and I just attended one of his sermons, which concluded with the public conversion of a jew. Since the assault of the Jewish quarter, in which I almost died when I was an apprentice, the number of Jews in Valencia has been steadily declining, although everyone knows that the converts continue to practice their customs in secret.
