Tanis (105-160)

I am Tanis, Egyptian slave.

I am 17 or 18, I do not know exactly, and I have been a slave as long as I can remember. My first master in Alexandria was told by the salesman that I came from the Egyptian city Tanis, which inspired my name. I was recently bought by a Spanish merchant who made an offer my owner could not refuse, presumably to keep up with Emperor Adriano’s passion for Egyptian culture, which has strengthened the popularity of all things from the Orient. We had a long journey stopping at many Mediterranean ports to reach Valencia, where Lucio Antonio Niger had commissioned a young servant of beautiful charms. I do not know anything about the city, but Iparco, the Greek pedagogue for the child of the house, knows a bit of my language and he informed me that some slaves formed a brotherhood of slaves that worshipsIsis, as in Egypt. When Hathor, daughter of Ra, deems it appropriate, I will join them.
