Pere Compte (?-1506)

I am Pere Compte master stone-cutter of the Lonja merchants

I have arrived at the old age with many honors and gracious recognitions for my great work, La Lonja, an authentic temple of business at the pinnacle of business in the city. After 15 years of work, we inaugurated the Room of Contracts, as impressive space, which for the time, was subtle and light thanks to the art of geometry. I learned to experiment with geometry thanks to the master Valdemar when we worked on the construction of the Royal Chapel of the Convent of Saint Dominic almost a half century ago. With him, I founded the guild of stone-cutters, of which I am master, and a little after his death, I replaced him as head of the expansion of the cathedral. This fact established me and allowed me to participate in the construction of many other magnificent buildings that have been erected in the city, like the palace of the Generalitat and the Estadi General. I was named master stone-cutter of the city and the charged me with the construction of the Lonja. Now, after a life dedicated to the art of stone, the compass, and the straighedge, now I can finally die peacefully. My name will be remembered forever.
