The Enlightenment Salon (1719-1799)

The palace of the Counts of Carlet, very near to the plaza of the Seu, is host to a variety of enlightened meetings in which current politics, scientific controversies and philosophy, the University and the work of the Sociedad Económica de Amigos del Paìs (The Economic Society of Friends of the Country) are debated. At times, the Inquisition controlled even the import and publication of scientific and political books, so news and ideas from abroad stand their greatest chances of being heard via meetings such as these.
